Public Safety Testing Information

Entry-Level Examinations

The Entry-Level Public Safety Examination Process provides candidates with job opportunities in a wide variety of job titles such as: Police Officer, State and County Correction Officer, Sheriff's Officer, Fire Fighter, and many other public safety related titles.

Law Enforcement: In order to be considered for employment in an entry-level law enforcement position, applicants must submit individual applications for each jurisdiction in which they are interested in working. Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will then be scheduled for and must pass a written exam called the Law Enforcement Examination (LEE). A link to the LEE FAQ can be found here.

Firefighter: Applicants interested in becoming a firefighter will need to take the entry-level firefighter written examination and the physical performance test (PPT). A link to the Entry-level Firefighter FAQ can be found here.

Promotional Examinations

The promotional selection process in New Jersey's Civil Service System is designed to provide all applicants with an equal opportunity to compete for a promotional position. For many of these promotional announcements, Orientation Guides are also provided. These guides are designed to give specific information regarding the testing process and to help candidates prepare for their upcoming examination. Click here for more information.
