Safe Routes to School Program

The Safe Routes to School program was established in 2006 with federal funding to enable and encourage children of all abilities to walk and bicycle to school. One of the main goals of the program is to make it safe for children to walk and bike to school. To accomplish this, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) partners with New Jersey's three Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) to award grants to communities to improve things like sidewalks, crosswalks, signals and paths along the routes to school.

For more information and assistance with bicycle and pedestrian travel in New Jersey, the Federal Highway Administration sponsors the New Jersey Safe Routes to School Resource Center at the Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
