NJDOT Commissioners

The evolution of the State agency responsible for development of transportation began as early as 1891 with the State Board of Agriculture. At that time, the President of the State Board of Agriculture was also designated as the administrator of roads in New Jersey.

Many organizational changes occurred in the years that followed and finally in 1935, leadership in the State Department of Highways was changed to a single State Highway Commissioner reporting directly to the governor.

From 1935 until the present day, a single Commissioner serves under the Governor of New Jersey as administrative and executive head of the Department. With legislation passed in 1966, the State Highway Department became the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).
