New Jersey and South Korea

SEOUL – Governor Phil Murphy, First Lady Tammy Murphy, and the New Jersey delegation continued the Governor-led Choose New Jersey economic mission on their second day in South Korea. Today was significant for New Jersey’s education agenda, highlighting universal Pre-K and higher education initiatives. First Lady Tammy Murphy attended a tour of Bandi Pre-K School and met with Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. The First Lady also witnessed the signing of agreements between Stockton University and Sookmyung University at Le Courdon Bleu.

Governor Murphy, New Jersey Delegation Attend Federations of Middle Market Enterprises of Korea (FOMEK) Breakfast Meeting

Governor Murphy and the New Jersey delegation participated in a breakfast meeting with member companies of the Federations of Middle Market Enterprises of Korea (FOMEK) to build a meaningful alliance between New Jersey’s business community and top FOMEK companies interested in establishing, running or expanding operations in New Jersey. The Governor delivered opening remarks, followed by a presentation on New Jersey’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) key sectors by Wesley Mathews, President and CEO of Choose New Jersey and Tim Sullivan, CEO of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. Other speakers included Hojoon Lee, Vice Chairman, FOMEK; and Juhyun Kim, Genesis BBQ.

First Lady Tammy Murphy Visits Bandi Pre-K School, Meets with Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education

First Lady Tammy Murphy visited Bandi Pre-K School and took a facility tour alongside South Korean government experts to discuss the early education and childcare system. In conversation with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, the First Lady also learned about South Korea's government-subsidized childcare and education system, such as efforts to support working mothers and combat low birth rates, which are key issues for the First Lady and her Nurture NJ initiative. The First Lady also participated in a book reading, providing an introductory level English language teaching moment for Bandi students. 

Governor Murphy Visits the War Memorial of Korea

Governor Murphy visited the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul to pay respects and offer prayers for the nearly seven million American veterans who served during the Korean War period. A moment of silence was held in front of the memorial stone where New Jersey veterans’ names are engraved. The visit is especially meaningful amid the 70th anniversary of the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea.

Governor Murphy Meets with U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip S. Goldberg

Governor Murphy met with the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip S. Goldberg, joined by U.S. Embassy, Seoul Senior Commercial Officer Andrew Gately and Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs Andrew Herrup to discuss common economic, academic and cultural goals and pathways to continue building a bilateral relationship between New Jersey and South Korea.

Governor Murphy, First Lady Tammy Murphy & New Jersey Delegation Participate in SelectUSA Roundtable

Governor Murphy, First Lady Tammy Murphy and the New Jersey delegation participated in a SelectUSA Roundtable to meet with South Korea’s top life sciences companies and discuss expansion and establishment opportunities in New Jersey. Young Choi, Chairman of Access Bio offered remarks, and a presentation was given by Wes Mathews and Tim Sullivan, showcasing the benefits of doing business in New Jersey.

First Lady Tammy Murphy Attends Korea Network of Women in Finance (KNWF) Roundtable

First Lady Tammy Murphy attended a roundtable meeting with the prestigious Korea Network of Women in Finance, made up of key figures leading South Korea’s female financiers. The First Lady discussed New Jersey as a world leader in financial services, pharmaceuticals, fintech and other sectors, creating opportunities for economic partnerships with South Korea’s top financial companies. The First Lady’s remarks included her experiences as a leader in the financial services industry, workplace equity, women’s rights and education. Remarks were also given by Chairwoman Sang-kyung Kim.

Governor Murphy & First Lady Tammy Murphy Meet with CJ AI Center Chairman & CEO Mr. Kyung Shik Sohn, Tour of CJ AI E&M Center

Governor Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy met with the Chairman of the CJ AI Center for an MOU signing between Princeton University and CJ AI Center, a leading global lifestyle company headquartered in South Korea. The agreement establishes collaborative research efforts and innovation in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer and information sciences between the two entities.

First Lady Tammy Murphy Visits Le Cordon Bleu to Witness Agreement Signing Between Sookmyung Women’s University and Stockton University

First Lady Tammy Murphy witnessed the signing of two agreements between Stockton University and Sookmyung Women’s University at the Le Cordon Bleu campus. As a Le Cordon Bleu graduate, the First Lady commended the agreements which establish a joint study abroad program and a student exchange program. As the first royal private educational institution for women, the visit highlights the impact of the First Lady’s contributions to international conversations on education, women’s rights and gender equity. The First Lady also met with Yunkeum Chang, President of Sookmyung Women’s University, and senior alumni Sunrye Kim and toured Le Cordon Bleu under the Division of Culture, Tourism & Hospitality Management. President of Stockton University Joe Bertolino also gave remarks about the partnership Stockton University hopes to forge with Sookmyung Women’s University.

Governor Murphy, New Jersey Delegation Tour the LG Science Park and Meet with LG Group

Governor Murphy and the New Jersey Delegation met with President & CEO Mr. Il-pyeong Park (I.P. Park) of LG Science Park, South Korea’s largest research and development complex. Mr. Park has experience leading the world’s leading innovative organizations, a key interest of the Murphy administration’s goal to sustain New Jersey as the nation’s innovation hub. LG’s North American subsidiary is headquartered in Englewood Cliffs. The Governor and Delegation also met with Head of LG Global Strategy Center, Changryeol Yoon, who recently joined LG and will take the key role in responding to global strategies and strengthening relationships with major countries.
