New Jersey Urban Mayors Association:

“New Jersey Urban Mayors Association Statement on Governor Phil Murphy’s Nomination of Fabiana Pierre-Louis to the Supreme Court of New Jersey In 1994 Justice James H. Coleman became the first African American to sit on the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Justice Coleman Retired in 2003 at which time Justice John Wallace Jr. was nominated and confirmed, becoming the second African American Justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court. Today Governor Murphy nominated Fabiana Pierre-Louis to serve as an associate justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, making her the first Black woman to serve on the court and only the third Black justice in the court’s history. The New Jersey Urban Mayors Association applauds the Governor for his choice in selecting Ms. Pierre-Louis who embodies the very essence of the American dream. As we are faced with a moment in history when America must choose the path of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all its citizens, creating judicial benches that reflect our society will be critical to making that choice a reality. The Association supports the nomination and confirmation of Ms. Pierre-Louis and is optimistic that this is the beginning of appointments to our highest court that reflect the diversity of our great State of New Jersey.”
