Office of Controversies and Disputes

This office assists the Commissioner adjudicate approximately 300-400 cases per year arising under the State’s school laws and regulations - such as cases related to student discipline, student residency, tenure claims, New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) appeals, as well as appeals from the State Board of Examiners and the School Ethics Commission. This office also administers the TEACHNJ arbitration program, which includes issuing determinations regarding whether the charges are sufficient to warrant dismissal and transmitting the matter to a member of the permanent panel of arbitrators for a hearing and decision.
