NJCHAP helps producers improve profits by promoting animal health, welfare, environmental stewardship and biosecurity. Call the Division of Animal Health at (609) 671-6400 to schedule a herd risk assessment on your farm.

Once a farmer enrolls in NJCHAP a cooperative effort between the farmer, the farmer’s veterinarian, NJDA veterinarians, NJDA animal health technicians and Rutgers Cooperative Extension agents will begin. The Core Module’s primary focus will be on best management practices in relation to biosecurity, animal health, and welfare.

The second focus of the program will develop an individualized herd plan for Johne’s disease control through a herd assessment and a basic but individualized herd plan for each producer with a specific eye on Johne’s control measures. The plan helps identify and remedy high-risk areas for Johne's transmission to calves and young stock. NJDA staff will discuss and educate the farmer about test and management issues with farmers and decide which type of testing offered at the NJ Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory will benefit the herd the most.

The third part of the program focuses on the extra biosecurity, management, and testing specific to Bovine Leukosis Virus control and eradication.

  • The Core Module: Designed to offer producers a “Best Management Practices” overview. With the aid of DAH, the farmers can have input from DAH consultants to help them improve the farm’s bottom line by discussing possible areas were management changes might minimize the amount of work they have to do and to increase the profitability of their operation.
  • The Johne’s Module: The most popular module for NJCHAP and the entry point for most farmers. It allows farmers to develop customized eradication, control and prevention strategies for this disease with the aid of NJDAH staff and resources. The goal is to be able to certify herds as Johne’s negative in accordance with Federal Guidelines.
  • The Bovine Leucosis Module(BLV): This module is for those farmers that have been successful and seen dividends payed from the Core Module and the Johne’s Module.  It builds on the work done in the Core and Johne’s module to help producers reduce the prevalence of BLV or even eliminate it in their herds.
